Micromechanics of sheared granular material Author: Parkinson, John S. Awarding Body: Loughborough University of Technology Current Institution: Loughborough University Date of Award: Availability of Full Text.   The complete primer to micromechanics. Fundamentals of Micromechanics of Solids is the first book integrating various approaches in micromechanics into a unified mathematical framework, complete with coverage of both linear and nonlinear behaviors. Based on this unified framework, results from the authors' own research, as well as existing results in the literature are re-derived in a logical Reviews: 2.

Summary. Cemented Granular Materials (CGMs) consist of a particle skeleton and a solid matrix partially filling the interstitial space. In this broad class we encounter a number of typical geotechnical materials such as sedimentary rocks (Sandstones, Conglomerates and Breccia) as well as naturally and artificially cemented sands. Non-coaxiality, as an important aspect of anisotropy of granular materials, may also produce significant effects on other plastic behaviors, such as dilatancy of materials. A micromechanics-based framework is developed to model the proportional behaviors.

Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. At some stage almost every industrial process involves a particulate material, and it is usually the .

The granular layer was sheared under dry conditions to establish a steady state condition of stick‐slip dynamic failure, and then fluid was introduced to study its effect on subsequent failure events.

The fluid‐saturated case showed increased stick‐slip recurrence time and larger slip events compared to the dry case. Most granular materials are amorphous and disordered as realized up to now.

However, crys-tal structures can be built by placing uniform particles on a regular lattice. The second part of the thesis is about pattern transformation in two-dimensional granular crystals composed of bi-disperse soft and hard cylindrical particles.
